Tour Overview

Like a pearl, the shape of the island belies the varied and beautiful landscape from coastal plains to cool highlands. Our tour takes in coastal fishing towns; hillside villages and velvety green tea country where pickers dot the landscape; as well as the Yala National Park where a large number of wildlife species live, including leopard.

Boasting an ancient history dating back 5,000 years, Anuradhapura, the erstwhile capital from the 5th century BC to 9th century AD and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, was the centre of the island's Buddhist civilisation. Sigiriya, another World Heritage site, is a spectacular rock fortress of 1.6 hectares where the Royal Palace stood from 495 AD. Many frescoes still remain, as do the water gardens and moat. Kataragama, the seat of government of many Sinhalese kings in ancient times, is a fascinating pilgrimage town sacred to Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim visitors alike who come here to worship.

The country also has an interesting colonial past, including the Portuguese and Dutch influences from the 17th century. However, modern Sri Lanka, proud of its rich history, also boasts beautiful hotels, delicious food and many gardens enjoyed by visitors. The Royal Botanical Gardens, for instance, in the exotic hill city of Kandy are spectacular. Sri Lanka is truly a gem!

This program includes placeswhich can only be explored on foot and where walking tours may be a little longer and not always on the flat. Accommodation may have some stairs and or have some rooms which may involve some walking to access.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.
If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
