Tour Highlights

  • Visit Kirkjubøur, the old cultural hub of the Islands. We visit Magnus Cathedral dating back to the 1300s and St. Olaf's Church before enjoying hot drinks and pastries in the world's oldest inhabited wooden house; Roykstovan.
  • A guided walk in the old part of Torshavn, known as Tinganes, a little peninsula delightfully jumbled with pretty turf-roofed cottages and historic red-painted stone-and-timber buildings.
  • Gjogv Culture Evening - A short coach ride with our guide north to the charming village of Gjogv. En route we will visit different villages to get an idea of what living was and is like in the Faroe Islands. In Gjogv where we will take part in a Faroese Culture Evening including a dinner buffet with local specialities, a great way to try new tastes!
  • Sailing from Vestmana. Our boat sails along the dramatic cliff wall into a narrow strait and into some of the many grottoes. If time permits, we will make a stop at an old Viking farmstead in the quaint village of Kvivik on our way back to Torshavn.

Tour Overview

Often rated as the No. 1 destination in the world among 111 island communities, the Faroe Islands offer spectacular scenery in a rugged environment: steep cliffs rising from the open sea, narrow straits between the islands, natural harbours surrounded by small villages and a countless number of birds.

The 18 small green islands located midway between Norway and Iceland have fewer than 50,000 inhabitants who, due to their isolated geographical location, have been able to preserve their own culture and language up to modern times. Quite an amazing sight.

We stay in Torshavn, one of the smallest capitals in the world, which despite its size offers everything fit for a capital: the Faroese Parliament, shops, hotels, fine restaurants and a cosy old town centre. There is much history mixed with modernity here.

From Torshavn we include a range of excursions and highlights, not least focusing on the great Faroese nature.

Tour Inclusions

  • Our program includes all excursions as detailed above as well as three dinners, including one in Gjooy with cultural evening and one at Restaurant Aarstova – famous for its delicious leg of lamb dish, served whole at your table, so you can carve it yourself, and its cosy atmosphere – much like visiting a typical Faroese family home!

Golden Compass France Ireland Scotland Tour Leader Louise Shave
Louise Shave

Louise Shave graduated from the University of Auckland, in Languages, History and Music and with a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching.

She has a passion for her chosen subjects and really enjoys sharing with travellers the history and culture of countries in which she has lived or experienced. The extensive time she has recently spent living in both France and Ireland has given her an in-depth knowledge of those particular countries. She is a fluent speaker of French.

For the past 14 years, she has led many outbound programmes, especially in Europe, the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, Ireland, India, Bhutan and Nepal. She is much in demand as a guest speaker.

For six years, Louise and her husband explored the waterways of Europe on their 20 metre converted Dutch Barge. Not content with river travel, they also sailed a 10 metre boat across the Irish Sea and then back to England. Three years were spent in Ireland on the canals and rivers, with numerous adventures, followed by more time around the coast and in the English waterways.

As well as those noted above, her interests include art, architecture, theatre, film, reading, trekking, and, not least, her family!

This program includes placeswhich can only be explored on foot and where walking tours may be a little longer and not always on the flat. Accommodation may have some stairs and or have some rooms which may involve some walking to access.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.
If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
