Tour Overview

As summer comes to England, our minds turn towards glorious Summer Festivals: the wonderful series of BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, a night out at the opera at Glyndebourne and to the summer performances of The Bard at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford and at the Globe in London. Our program combines these inspiring events into a summer symphony of culture and allows you to sit back and relax while enjoying some stunning performances of drama and music.

However, our musical and dramatic pursuits do not prevent us from enjoying some of the best scenery England has to offer. Naturally, while in London, we visit splendid Kew Palace and Gardens, enjoy a day out on the Thames at Windsor and Eton and take advantage of the special summer opening of Buckingham Palace. We stay at Brighton, close to Glyndebourne, to visit the Royal Pavilion and nearby Sissinghurst Gardens, as well as the quaint towns and villages of Kent and East Sussex, such as Tenterden and Rye. While in Stratford, not only do we visit the town of The Bard but also explore the quintessential villages and countryside of the Cotswolds.

Our program includes special expert introductions to the Shakespeare performances attended and to the opera viewed. We also include a specialist Shakespeare tour of London, as well as a performance of one of London's more contemporary showstoppers, to be selected by our theatre-loving Program Leader.

Mark has now retired from his role as CEO but still enjoys arranging and leading specialist groups for Golden Compass Tours.

Mark is double Honours graduate from King's College London in Modern Languages – French and German, an Associate of Kings College (Divinity) and a Fellow of the Institute of Travel & Tourism, as well as a past Member of the Institute of Directors.

He has taught in France as well as spending significant periods of time in Germany, Italy and Austria as well as travelling extensively through almost all of Europe and North Africa. He has led a number of tours through Scandinavia, the Baltics and the Balkans.

Most of the cities and towns visited on this program can be explored by coach, where walking tours are relatively short and generally on the flat and all hotels have lifts with easily accessible rooms.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.

If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
