Tour Overview

The outstanding natural beauty, varied landscapes - from dramatic peaks to quaint seaside resorts, a distinctive Celtic heritage and a fine range of impressive castles, ruined abbeys, mansions and cities full of magnificent architecture have long attracted visitors to Wales. Renowned as a country of spectacular scenery and a vibrant culture, specialising in male voice choirs, poetry, and a passionate love of team sports, Wales has now emerged from the yoke of its larger neighbour and gained a degree of partial devolution. Welsh is an expansive and musical language and a longstanding oral tradition has produced many outstanding public speakers, politicians and actors. Welsh heritage is also steeped in song, music, poetry and legend: a tradition preserved by bards, minstrels and poets, often associated with Druids, and celebrated in 'Eisteddfods', festivals of Welsh culture.

Mark Goodwin leads this program once more in search of his Welsh heritage and ancestry. We visit the attractive valleys of the Wye and Usk in Monmouthshire to visit Roman Caerleon and romantic Tintern, We learn about the industrial heritage of Wales at Big Pit, view its elegant capital city, Cardiff, where we visit its justly famed Museum of Welsh Life. We view imposing Norman castles, such as Caerphilly, Conwy and Caernarfon. We seek out the awesome natural scenery of the Pembrokeshire Coast, the Gower Peninsula, the isle of Anglesey and majestic Snowdonia. We admire the horticulture of the National Botanical Gardens of Wales. We visit the UK’s smallest city, St David’s. We ride some of the Great Little trains of Wales. We learn about Welsh literary heritage from the manuscripts of the National Library at Aberystwyth to Dylan Thomas at Laugharne. We also attend the Welsh National Eisteddfod.

This program includes places which can only be explored on foot and where walking tours may be a little longer and not always on the flat. Accommodation may have some stairs and or have some rooms which may involve some walking to access.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.
If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
